Field Notes
8/1/12-12/31/12

Giant Swallowtails were observed in small numbers throughout the month of August with the last one reported on September 4th.  The influx of southern immigrants noted earlier in the year continued through the reporting period and the southern species reported previously were joined by two additional species, Long-tailed Skipper, first reported on August 9th and Ocola Skipper, first reported on August 18th.  The number of sightings of Long-tailed Skipper in 2012 was much higher than in recent prior years, when there were at most 1 or 2 sightings in a year.  Sachem numbers continue to increase, with as many as 80-100 individuals being reported on August 24th.  Sachems were no longer restricted to coastal localities as evidenced by the fact that I observed Sachems breeding on lawns in Wallingford through the month of September and the last Sachem of the year being reported from the Yale satellite campus in West Haven on November 6th.   For the second consecutive year, Horace’s Duskywing was reported on the CBA field trip to Bauer Farm in Madison, an indication that the species is resident at this site.  106 Little Yellows were found at a site in Old Saybrook on September 8th.  Painted Ladies staged a sizable incursion in mid-August as evidenced by the reports of 25 individuals on August 13th and August 14th, respectively.  Red-banded Hairstreaks were reported in good numbers with the last ones being reported from Niantic and Derby on October 6th.  For the second time, a Brazilian Skipper was found in Niantic.  This year’s individual was sighted on September 22nd. For the second consecutive year, thanks to a relatively mild late fall, butterflies were reported through November, primarily from coastal localities.  The final sighting of 2012 was a report of Clouded and Orange Sulphurs and Mourning Cloak in Milford on December 3rd.
