Field Notes
6/1/12-7/31/12

A comparison of the emergence dates for the 33 species first reported from the state during this 2012 reporting period did not reveal any strong trends compared to 2011.  11 species emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2011, 9 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2011 and 10 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2011. (3 species recorded in 2012 were not reported at all in 2011.)  However, four southern immigrant species, Cloudless Sulphur, Little Yellow,
Fiery Skipper and Sachem were all reported on record early dates of June 30th, July 14th,
July 1st and June 3rd ,respectively.  Two resident species, Baltimore Checkerspot and Aphrodite Fritillary, also were reported on record early dates.  Baltimore Checkerspot was first reported on June 3rd and Aphrodite Fritillary was first reported on June 10th.  Sleepy Orange, a species not reported from the state for years, was seen and photographed on June 28th. The first brood of Red-banded Hairstreaks stopped flying in mid-June.  The  second brood of Giant Swallowtails appeared to emerge beginning on July 19th.  While American Ladies and Red Admirals continued to be reported throughout this reporting period, they were not being seen in big numbers the way they were earlier in the year.  Notable sightings of state-listed species included Northern Metalmark on July 2nd.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
