Field Notes
1/1/12-5/31/12

What a difference a year makes.  Thanks to the combination of a mild winter and early spring, a total of 55 species of butterflies were reported in the first five months of 2012, compared to 41 species reported in the first 5 months of 2011, 50 species reported in the first 5 months of 2010 and 50 species reported in first 5 months of 2009.  Of the 55 species that emerged during this reporting period in 2012, 7 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2011 and 46 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2011.  Only 1 species, Gary Hairstreak, emerged later than it did in 2011.  During this reporting sizable incursions of American Ladies, Red Admirals and anglewings, apparently all Question Marks, were noted.  These incursions were apparently attributable to the combination of the mild winter coupled with significant spring rains in the southeastern US that helped alleviate the drought in that part of the country.  Giant Swallowtail successfully over-wintered in the state as evidenced by the May 12th emergences in at least two different sites.  The reports of Sleepy Duskywing on May 12th  and May 19th were notable because this is a state listed species.
