Field Notes
6/1/11-7/31/11

There was a noticeable pattern in emergence dates during this 2011 reporting period. While southern species at the northern edges of their ranges and southern immigrant species tended to appear 1-2 weeks earlier than they did in 2010, long-term resident species in the state emerged on dates that were consistent with or later than their 2010 emergence dates.  This appears to be a continuation of a trend noted in the January-May 2011 reporting period and a reversal of the trend towards early emergences noted during the June-July 2010 reporting period.  Southern species appear to continue to expand their ranges in the state.  First brood Red-banded Hairstreaks appeared at new localities in the state as evidenced by the reports of this species on June 2nd in Guilford and June 4th in Milford.  In 2007 and 2008, there were no reports of Red-banded Hairstreak during the June-July reporting period.  In 2009, the first sighting of Red-banded Hairstreak occurred  on June 30th.  It was found in Naugatuck.  In 2010, Red-banded Hairstreak not reported until July 31st. That individual was found in New Haven.  An incursion of Giant Swallowtails began during this reporting period with the report of eggs and caterpillars being found in Chester as noted in the article in the Winter 2011-12 issue of the newsletter.  The first adult Giant Swallowtail of 2011 was found in Canaan on July 9th.  The report of multiple Giant Swallowtails on July 31st was the first indication that a brood emerged in the Canaan-Falls Village section of Litchfield County.  Notable sightings of state-listed species included Common Roadside Skipper on June 3rd, Dion Skipper on July 11th and Northern Metalmark on July 15th.  The reports of Horace’s Duskywing in Winchester on June 3rd and Madison on June 27th, both sites where the species has not previously reported, is either an indication this species is expanding its range in the state or, alternatively, that observers are becoming more skilled at identifying this southern species.
