Field Notes
1/1/11-5/31/11

A total of 41 species of butterflies were reported in the first five months of 2011, compared to 50 species reported in the first 5 months of 2010, 50 species reported in the first 5 months of 2009 and 43 species reported in the first 5 months of 2008.  Of the 41 species that emerged during this reporting period in 2011, 9 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2010 and 28 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2010.  Only 4 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2010.  Given the very harsh winter of 2010-2011, it is not a suprise that the first butterflies of the year emerged later than they did in 2010.  However, the trend towards late emergences continued through the remainder of the reporting period. The report of Sleepy Duskywing on May 21st was notable because this is a state listed species.
