Field Notes
6/1/14-7/31/14

A comparison of the emergence dates for the 41 species first reported from the state during this 2014 reporting period documented that the majority of the butterflies emerging during this reporting period emerged on dates that were consistent with or later their 2013 emergence dates.  27 species emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2013, 7 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2013 and only 4 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2013. (4 species sighted during this 2014 reporting period were not reported at all in 2013.)  There were five reports of Northern Metalmark, a state listed species, during the period July 3rd through July 10th.  Dion Skipper, another state listed species, was reported on July 7th and July 12th.  Bog Copper was reported on July 7th, the first sighting since 2011.  The infrequently reported Oak Hairstreak was also sighted on July 7th.  Harvester, a species not reported at all in 2013, was first sighted on June 7th.  Second brood Giant Swallowtails appeared to emerge beginning on July 26th.  Monarchs were reported in small numbers during this reporting period.
