Field Notes
8/1/13-12/31/13

There were 32 reports of Giant Swallowtails during this reporting period in 2013 compared with 50 reports during the corresponding 2012 reporting period. It is unclear whether the number of Giant Swallowtails decreased between 2012 and 2013 or they are being reported less frequently because they are no longer such a novelty. The last Giant Swallowtail for the year was reported on September 3rd. The number of southern immigrants found in the state during 2013 was much smaller than the number found in 2012. Little Yellow and Long-tailed Skipper, two southern immigrant species found in the state in large numbers in 2012, were not reported from the state in 2013. Monarch numbers continued to be low throughout the reporting period. The high count of 34 Monarchs was reported on September 25th. As a result of the early onset of cold weather, the final sighting of 2013 was a report of Sachem on October 28th.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
