Field Notes
6/1/13-7/31/13

A comparison of the emergence dates for the 44 species first reported from the state during this 2013 reporting period makes it evident that the trend in late emergences noted in the preceding reporting continued into this reporting period. 15 species emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2012, 24 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2012 and only 2 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2012. (4 species reported in 2013 were not reported at all in 2012.) First brood Red-banded Hairstreaks were first reported on June 2nd whereas in 2012, they were first reported on April 29th. First brood Giant Swallowtails were reported beginning on June 2nd and the second brood appeared to emerge beginning on July 18th. Silvery Blue was reported from a new location in Winchester on June 15th. Notable sightings of state-listed species included Dion Skipper on July 8th. While Monarchs were sighted throughout the reporting period, both the number of reports and the numbers of reported individuals were much lower than the numbers reported in 2012. While there were 37 reports of Monarchs during this reporting period in 2012, there were only 12 such reports during 2013. The high count of 5 Monarchs was reported on July 10th.
