Field Notes
6/1/10-7/31/10

The combination of early spring warmth and precipitation followed by extremely hot dry conditions in July affected flight times of numerous species in 2010.  Thanks to the early spring warmth, Little Yellow, four species of Satyrium hairstreaks, Northern Pearly Eye and four species of skippers were all reported on record early dates during the reporting period.  However, the combination of early emergences and hot dry conditions in July resulted in single brooded species, such as the Satyrium hairstreaks and Baltimore Checkerspots, ending their flight periods one or two weeks earlier than they did in 2009.  Red Admirals were found in the state in good numbers during the reporting period, as evidenced by the report of 15 Red Admirals on June 7th, numerous Red Admirals on June 30th and 23 Red Admirals on July 24th.  Silver-bordered Fritillaries were reported on June 25th, July 3rd and July 31st, respectively, from sites where they heretofore had not been seen, an indication that this species may be expanding its range in the state.
