Field Notes
6/1/09-7/31/09

June was an unusually cold and rainy month.  Therefore, it was not surprising that butterflies emerging during this reporting period emerged on dates consistent with or later than the dates on which they emerged in 2008.  Of the 39 species that emerged during this reporting period, 19 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2008, 11 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2008 and only 4 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2008.  A highlight of this reporting period was the Gray Comma reported on July 6th.  While not the first report of the species in recent years (a Gray Comma of questionable origin was reported in 2004), it was the first report of the the species in recent years from northwestern Litchfield County where they historically had occurred.  The report of Common Roadside Skipper on June 6th was another notable sighting.  The first Sachem of the year was reported on the unusally early date of July 27th.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
