Field Notes
1/1/09-5/31/09

A total of 50 species of butterflies were reported in the first five months of 2009, compared to 43 species reported in the first 5 months of 2008, 47 species reported in the first 5 months of 2007 and 54 species reported in the first 5 months of 2006. Butterflies emerging during the first 5 months of 2008 tended to emerge on dates either consistent with or earlier than they did in 2007.  Of the 43 species that emerged during this reporting period in 2008, 16 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2007 and 20 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2007.  That trend continued in 2009.  Of the 50 species that emerged during this reporting period in 2009, 23 emerged within a week of first emergence in 2008 and 20 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2008.  Only 7 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2008.  It will be interesting to see if this trend continues in 2010.
