Field Notes
6/1/08-7/31/08

Butterflies emerging during this reporting period tended to emerge on dates consistent dates they emerged on in 2007.  Of the 44 species that emerged during this reporting period, 18 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2007, 13 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2007 and 13 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2007.   For the second year in a row, Satyrium hairstreak numbers were down significantly at sites in New Haven and New London counties where they historically were found in good numbers.  However, Acadian Hairstreak, a Satyrium species not reported at all in 2007, was reported on multiple occasions during the period July 16th through July 29th.  Southern immigrants first reported in the state during the reporting period included Common Buckeye first reported on June 11 th, Variegated Fritillary first reported on July 5th and American Snout first reported on July 8 th. Tawny Emperor, a southern species at the northern end of its range, was reported a coastal localities beginning on July 30th.
