Field Notes

1/1/03 - 5/31/03

While the first 5 months of 2002 were notable on account of the early emergence of butterflies, the first 5 months of 2003 were notable because of the late emergence of many species. Of the 36 species included in this report, 22 species were reported on dates at least one week later than the corresponding date in 2002. Of those 22 species, 17 species were reported at least 2 weeks later than they were in 2002. While not evident in this report, the late emergences resulted in unusally late flight dates for a number of species. The highlight of this reporting period was the invasion of breeding Milbertís Tortoiseshells, a species seen so infrequently that there apparently were no records of thisspecies during the 5-year Connecticut Butterfly Atlas project.
