Field Notes

1/1/04-5/31/04

After a very harsh winter, the 2004 butterfly season started out slowly. In years past, while Mourning Cloaks and other species that overwintered as adults emerged as early as mid-February, this year, the first butterfly of the year was not reported until March 15th andit was not until March 26th that the other species that overwintered as adults started to appear. That all changed, however, on April 16th and April 17th when butterflies started to appear in good numbers and began to emerge early compared to previous years. The highlight of this reporting period was the discovery of Henryís Elfin in East Lyme on April 22nd .This species has not been in the state for years.Interestingly, Eastern Pine Elfin was found in greater than average numbers and a colony of Frosted Elfins was discovered in Walden Preserve in Salem.2004 certainly was a good year year for elfins. While there was only a single report of Milbertís Tortoiseshell during this reporting period, by June, this species spread out to scattered sites across the state.
