Field Notes

8/1/02 - 12/31/02

While July was notable for its low numbers of butterflies, by early August, resident butterflies starting appearing in numbers. However, the most interesting aspect of the butterflying season was the influx of immigrants. It began with the first reports of Cloudless Sulphur on August 19th and Fiery Skipper on August 20th. On September 9th, the first Sachem for the year was reported for the state. From mid-September through early October, there were unprecedented reports ofFiery Skippers, Sachems and Ocola Skippers at garden centers near the coast and other coastal locations. Common Checkered Skipper was reported on August 25th and October 5th, respectively, Little Yellow was reported on September 27th, Long-tailed Skipper was reported on October 2nd,and Checkered White was reported from two different locations on October 6th. However, it wasnít only southern immigrants that were on the move. Milbertís Tortoiseshell was reported from twocoastal locations on September 13th and September 25th, respectively. Unfortunately, because of a cold snap and early frosts, the butterflying season came to an abrupt conclusion after October 6th.Only a handful of reports were received after that date.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
