Field Notes

8/1/07-12/31/07

2007 was a good year for southern immigrants. Immigrant Pipevine Swallowtails were reported from coastal localities through October 8th. Cloudless Sulphur was first reported on August 17th and continued to be reported until October 23rd. Little Yellow, a species not reported in 2006, was found on September 19th and 20th. Common Checkered Skipper, another species not reported in 2006, was reported during the period September 23rd through October 6th. Fiery Skipper was first reported on August 8th, Sachem was first reported on September 4th and Long-tailed Skipper was first reported on September 27th. Only a single Ocola Skipper was reported this year, on October 16th. However, in terms of southern skippers, surely the highlight of this season was the first Brazilian Skipper ever reported for the state, a single individual photographed on October 8th. Much like 2006, there was an unusually high number of Red-banded Hairstreaks reported, with the first one reported on August 3rd and the last ones reported on September 2nd. Migrating Monarchs were reported in good numbers, with a high count of 2,000 on October 5th. Migrating Red Admirals were reported to be numerous on September 4th and September 16th.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
