Connecticut Butterfly Association

Field Notes

6/1/07-7/31/07

Butterflies emerging during this reporting period tended to emerge on dates either consistent with or earlier than they did in 2006. Of the 34 species that emerged during this reporting period, 15 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2006 and 12 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2006. Only 7 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2006. The resident population of Pipevine Swallowtails apparently was apparently supplemented by southern immigrants during the reporting period, accounting for reports of Pipevine Swallowtails at Walden Preserve, Salem on 7/1, coastal Milford on 7/24 and in Old Lyme on 7/31. Migrant Red Admirals were widely reported during this period, with probably the most interesting report being the sighting of 60+ Red Admirals out on the Long Island Sound on 7/2. A northern immigrant, Milbert’s Tortoiseshell, was first reported on 6/9, with additional reports received through the end of the reporting period. On a negative note, Satyrium hairstreak numbers were down significantly at sites in New Haven and New London counties where they were historically were found in good numbers. On a positive note, 66 Silver-bordered Firitllaries, a very high count for the species, were found on the CBA field trip to Flaherty Field Trial Area on 7/14.
