.

A highlight of this season was an unprecedented number of Red-banded Hairstreak reports in the state with the first one reported on August 12th and reports continuing through August 22nd. While Red-banded Hairstreak has previously been reported in the state in August, this is the first time it has been reported in numbers with no fewer than seven separate reports. 2006 was a good year for southern immigrants. It began with the first report of Fiery Skipper on July 22nd. Cloudless Sulphur was first reported on August 18th. Sachem was first reported on August 26th and Ocola Skipper was first reported on September 4th. The first Checkered White reported for the year was found in Kent on August 13th. It is very unusual for Checkered White to be reported so far inland. Variegated Fritillary, a southern immigrant first reported in early July, appeared through in small numbers through September and was last reported on October 15th. Migrating Monarchs were reported in good numbers, with a high count of 1,000 on September 30th.

Thanks to periods of relatively warm weather extending into early December, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, Clouded Sulphur, Cloudless Sulphur, Gray Hairstreak, American Snout, Variegated Fritillary, Common Buckeye, Viceroy, Common Sootywing, Leonard’s Skipper, Little Glassywing and Zabulon Skipper were all reported on record late dates.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
