Connecticut Butterfly Association

Field Notes

6/1/06-7/31/06

Unlike earlier in the year, butterflies emerging during this reporting period tended to emerge on dates either consistent with or later than they did in 2005. Of the 40 species that emerged during this reporting period, 20 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2005 and 13 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2005. Only 7 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2005. In the prior 2006 reporting period, the pattern of early and late emergences was essentially reversed. The first Red-banded Hairstreak of the year appeared on June 11th, a precursor of what proved to be a major incursion of this species in August.

Please note that caps indicate the first record posted for the year and italics indicate the last.
