Connecticut Butterfly Association

Field Notes

1/1/06-5/31/06

Butterflies emerging during this reporting period tended to emerge on dates either consistent with or earlier than they did in 2005. Of the 54 species that emerged during this reporting period, 15 emerged within a week of their date of first emergence in 2005 and 31 species emerged at least a week earlier than they did in 2005. Only 6 species emerged at least a week later than they did in 2005. (Two species not reported in 2005 were excluded from this comparision.) The trend towards early emergences was particularly noticeable in the case of the species that emerged in early spring. After being relatively scarce for a few years, Compton Tortoiseshells were widely reported beginning on March 27th.
